In today’s networks, along with specialized active network appliances (routers, hubs, switches, repeaters, etc.) are widely used computer-based network appliances.

In some cases, this is due to the ability to combine the functionality of the network device with other PC functions, in other cases – a more complex, flexible or non-standard network configuration.

Polywell PCs are used as so-called network security appliances: intrusion detection systems (IDS), intrusion prevention systems (IPS), wireless intrusion detection and prevention systems (WIPDS), unified threat management systems (UTM), network access control systems (NAC), proxy servers, etc.

Polywell network PCs are also used for very specific and specific functions. Thus, POE-7000 system not only has three standard Ethernet ports, but also is a PoE (Power over Ethernet) generator. Many specialized appliances (e.g. IP cameras) have to be placed in areas where a normal mains power supply is not available. In such cases, PoE becomes the only way to power remote appliances. Typically specialized and quite expensive routers are used as a PoE generator. Therefore, the Polywell POE-7000 system is just a successful and cost-effective example of combining functionality.

Some Polywell PCs can be easily confused with a router or hub even by their appearance. An example is the eight-port H170L8-1U.

Network appliances based on mini Polywell Computers PCs benefit from high reliability due to the use of industrial grade components, not commercial grade. They are specially designed to work in 365/24 mode. Unlike many competitors, Polywell Computers openly publishes mean time between failures (MTBF) values for its systems. This is typically 100,000 hours.

Some systems have PCI-e and miniPCI-e expansion slots. There are mini PCs with a significant number of USB ports as well as RS232/RS485 ports. Some industrial mini PCs are fanless, which accounts for their low power consumption and quiet operation.
