Interview with Sam Chu, Founder and CEO of Polywell Computers.
  1. Since the founding of Polywell Computers in 1987, what have been the most significant milestones that have defined the company’s trajectory in the technology industry?

Polywell takes its position in the Silicon Valley to be able to get the latest hardware and software technologies through its years of relationship establishment and adapt the technologies to develop and productize new solution products ahead of other competitions.
Based in the US, we are able to get a better global market vision and demands while we are serving our US enterprise customers who present worldwide establishment of their business, we understand what their problems and which directions they are heading forward, allow us to build solution products to meet their needs and deploying to the global markets.
We are not just making PC which was how we start 38 years ago, now we are making computing equipment to help business to solve problem or to enhance their business as business tools. Products now range from embedded appliance (PC), Media Players for Digital Signage, IPTV, Entertainment, Video over network, Cyber Security, Physical security, Visual appliances, AI Edge, IoT, Kiosk, Parking, etc. Our product line ranges from small form factor embedded PCs to AI workstations, cloud servers, storage solutions, and high-end 400G network servers for SDN.

  1. Polywell Computers has been recognized for the quality and reliability of its computer systems. What strategies and processes does the company implement to maintain these standards in such a competitive market?

Polywell has enhanced its quality assurance management system to better serve enterprise and government clients. This system aligns with essential standards required in the US, enabling us to expand into broader markets and grow our business further.

Our size allows us to remain flexible, catering to small and mid-size businesses with lower minimum order quantity (MOQ) requirements—a market segment that Tier 1 manufacturers like Foxconn find economically unsuitable due to their scale and the need for large MOQs. Additionally, many smaller competitors may not meet the same level of quality standards required for these business needs. This unique positioning allows us to serve a specialized segment of the market more effectively.

  1. The company has expanded its presence beyond the United States, covering markets in Europe, Latin America and Asia. What challenges and opportunities have you encountered in this international expansion?

This is very individual.

The challenges and opportunities we encounter in our international expansion are highly individual and depend on various factors, including the specific region or country we are focusing on. These dynamics can even change over time within a single market. For example, Europe was one of our fastest-growing markets a few years ago, but in recent years, the situation has been different. Economic conditions in each country play a significant role – strong economic growth typically leads to increased demand for our products, while downturns can have the opposite effect.

As a company with a global reach, we continuously monitor market trends, seeking to capitalize on emerging opportunities while mitigating potential risks. One key strategy in this process is forming partnerships with local businesses. We work closely with our partners, providing training in our business model and quality standards to help replicate Polywell’s approach in each region. By leveraging local expertise and resources, we can effectively serve enterprise customers with a presence across multiple regions. Additionally, we deploy outside representatives in various regions to support our partners’ growth, ensuring we deliver excellent service and support to our shared customers.

  1. In addition to his role as a business leader, you are recognized as an  innovative hardware engineer. How does your technical expertise influence the company’s strategic decisions and product development?

I am not just siting on the management position in Polywell, I also take care of key customers and lead our product development. So that I understand what the market trend, demands and what technologies are available, what product we should develop to be able to compete.

  1. Polywell Computers has received numerous awards from specialized publications. How do you assess these recognitions and how do they influence the perception of the company both internally and in the market?

Polywell Computers is a small company, but the awards we receive from specialized publications validate the competitive edge of our products. These recognitions reassure our customers that they are getting the best price-performance ratio when choosing our solutions.

However, obtaining awards has never been our goal or driving force. Our focus has always been on designing and manufacturing high-quality computing solutions that meet real customer needs. The recognition we receive is simply a byproduct of our dedication to excellence.

Internally, these awards reinforce our confidence in competing successfully with Tier 1 manufacturers. They serve as a testament to our commitment to innovation, quality, and customer satisfaction, motivating our team to continue pushing the boundaries of performance and reliability.

In the market, such accolades enhance our reputation, strengthening trust among existing customers and attracting new ones who seek high-quality computing solutions at competitive prices.

  1. Sustainability and corporate social responsibility are increasingly relevant topics in the technology industry. What initiatives has Polywell Computers taken in these areas?

Polywell Computers has been in the market since 1987, demonstrating long-term sustainability in an industry where many well-known companies – such as Data General, DEC, Compaq, Gateway, Micron PC, and AST – have exited the PC market. Our ability to adapt and thrive over decades is a testament to our resilience, reliability, and commitment to providing high-quality computing solutions.

For our customers and partners, this longevity translates into trust and reduced business risk. Our sustainability shows our strength and reliability, making it less risky to do business with us. They can rely on Polywell Computers for stable product availability, long-term support, and a commitment to continuous innovation.

One of our core philosophies is captured in our slogan: Think Big. Go Small. Eco-Smart Computing. This reflects our belief that traditional bulky desktop towers, with their 250W+ power supplies, are outdated. Many companies continue using these large, noisy, and inefficient systems out of inertia, but we see the future differently.

We recognized long ago that small form factor (SFF) PCs could replace legacy desktops, offering the same performance at a lower cost while being more efficient, compact, and environmentally friendly. By focusing on SFF PCs, we not only save on materials and space but also contribute significantly to the green agenda. Our typical power supply for an average office or embedded PC can be as low as 36W –  dramatically reducing energy consumption compared to traditional desktops.

At Polywell Computers, sustainability isn’t just about staying in business; it’s about driving technological progress while minimizing environmental impact.
